What next?

September 2nd, 2010 Cake Posted in Career Comments Off

I have been pondering about this quite a bit lately as the time draws closer for DD to start school full time. My friend and I both agreed that it would be near to impossible to work full time unless we are willing to send our kids to before and after school childcare. However both of us believe in being there as much as we could for our kids, therefore that is not an option.

Thankfully we are not pressed to rejoin the workforce asap. We could take our time to work things out. Getting a part time job within the school hours will certainly be a challenge.

Rejoining the workforce

February 17th, 2010 Cake Posted in Career Comments Off

I was talking to a friend the other day. She told me she is preparing herself with the necessary qualifications in preparation for careers which she hopes to get into next year.

It is this kind of people whom I have utmost respect for. I will skip the part about her background but all I can say is that after listening to her humble beginnings, I can’t help but see her as one of my few role models in life.

As for myself, I really don’t know.  I try not to have to work outside the home because I really want to be there for my little girl at all times especially when she is my one and only child.  Because my childhood was devoid of motherly bond, I want to spend as much time as I can around my girl.  We shall see how things go, as long as we could afford it, I will try to remain a SAHM until my girl is grown up enough perhaps to be a teenager :)

Working in a legal firm

January 26th, 2010 Cake Posted in Career Comments Off

Though I have worked in two legal firms before, I must admit I hated it. Mostly because I didn’t have an interest in law or anything associated with it. Secondly, I disliked the arrogance of most of the lawyers at work be it young or old but then again perhaps it was just unfortunate that I have had to deal with such lawyers.

Anyway I wonder how the working environment in legal firms in USA is. What would it be like to work for an Oklahoma City lawyer? Would they be nicer to work with? I guess I will never know since there is no way I would return to working in a legal firm.

Back to my experience, I did have a very pleasant time working directly under a lawyer who owns the legal firm. It was very funny, everyone else at the firm was afraid of him, they had warned me about what a perfectionist he is and that I should expect to be yelled at by him for the slightest mistake as was the case with his previous other staff.

Guess what? I broke the record at the time as the only staff who worked directly under him who never got yelled at. Instead he commended me so much I was really flattered and very surprised.

I think I took him by surprise one day when he told me that “Money is everything” and I answered “Money is something but not everything”. I hope he remembers that forever ?

Truckies

January 1st, 2009 Cake Posted in Career Comments Off

We pass by many trucks when we drive along the highways. I must admit, I get a little scared each time, silly me. Sometimes I think of people who drive trucks, what a difficult job it must be to have to drive throughout the night and to stay very alert at the same time. I wonder if the truck driving school gave them any tips on how to stay awake.

I don’t know if truck driving pays well. All I know is that I have read in the past year how truckies were given unreasonably deadlines to deliver their goods to big chains of supermarket, often forcing the truckies to speed. Poor truckies.

I am sure many truckies are hard working people, most do it to feed their families. I hate it when big companies tend to make life difficult for others.

Subway franchise

November 28th, 2008 Cake Posted in Career Comments Off

We cannot deny that people in many nations are facing difficult times. However life has to go on and people continue to work harder than before. Unfortunately working hard does not guarantee long term employment. It is not surprising to see headlines of huge corporations downsizing and cutting thousands of jobs these days.

Perhaps it might be a feasible idea to look into running one’s own business? How about a Subway franchise? I see Subway almost everywhere and they do not seem to run short of customers. The one near our estate is doing brisk business with its location just opposite the Leisure Centre where people hunt for good and healthy food after a session of swimming, games and workout.

It is scary how the world economy tumbled. Just hang in there and do the best in whatever you are doing. I hope that everyone is doing well be it as an employee or a business owner.

Work Overseas

September 1st, 2008 Cake Posted in Career Comments Off

Working overseas is always a great experience and an opportunity few would turn down. However, not everyone is priviledged enough to be sent by the current company for an overseas assignment or to get an internal transfer. Worse case scenario is to quit one’s job and venture out on your own for example to the United States. We all know that there are thousands of job placement companies such as Atlanta jobs that would be more than happy to assist you in giving your career a kick start by matching your work experience with suitable and prospective employers.

Forget about browsing through the career section of the newspaper and circling job ads endlessly. Let the job agencies take care of everything for you. You may even enjoy a holiday (before you get tied up with work) while the agencies work hard to get you a job placement. Sounds good?
